PERSONAL PRINCIPLES FOR LEADERSHIP AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FIRST PART The Foundation: Competence, Knowledge and Understanding Over the years, my journey through Nigeria’s power industry has convinced me that our greatest challenge is not necessarily a shortage of ideas. We have produced policies, reforms, committees, roadmaps and capable professionals. What we often struggle with is the sustained competence, courage, discipline and institutional memory required to turn good ideas into lasting results. Reading Dr. Joy Ofinjite Ogaji’s "Powered by Purpose" reinforced many principles I already strongly believe in and gave me new language for some of the lessons I have encountered professionally. Three principles particularly stood out to me. 1. Competence has no gender. Competence has no gender, tribe, religion, age or political affiliation. A country develops when capable people are placed where they can create the greatest value. Leadership should increasingly be about *ability, character, knowledge and measurable performance. My principle is simple: Put competence first. When competence becomes the standard, society becomes the beneficiary. 2. Understand before forming an opinion. One lesson that strongly reflects my own philosophy is the importance of understanding before reaching a conclusion. The sequence should be: Understand first. Analyse second. Form an opinion third. Decide when the facts are clear. Too many important decisions are made from assumptions, emotions, pressure or incomplete information. Real leadership asks questions before prescribing solutions. 3. Knowledge is an armour. One of the most memorable lessons in the memoir is the advice Dr. Ogaji received from her mother: “Read, and no one can ever make you feel small.” That statement goes beyond reading. Knowledge, competence, character, experience and integrity are investments that nobody can easily take away. Titles disappear. Positions change. Influence can expire. But knowledge and competence travel with you. These principles have shaped how I think about professional growth and leadership. But knowledge alone is not enough.
